Foundation Drawing 8 class meetings • 3 hours each Register for this class

Students will learn the basics of drawing with traditional media, pencil, charcoal, conte, and ink. The students will draw from observation and render those observations through the use of the elements of art & principals of design to create studies and finished drawings.

• draw (3) 5 min. drawings of a pile of shoes
• use a picture viewer
• create gesture drawings of shoes
• draw the negative spaces between shoes, between edges
• use outline, contour, & cross contour
• make thumbnail drawings
• create value scales with several different drawing media
• render egg forms with attention to light & form, cast shadows & reflected shadows, direct & reflected light
• render drapery with a variety of drawing media
• understand organic vs. geometric shapes & forms
• create a grid viewer
• compose the picture plane on gridded drawing paper
• create drawings for class critique with a variety of drawing media
• participate in class critique
• explore blind contour drawing
• coat paper with a middle value using charcoal and draw with eraser and black to render light and darks
• participate in class critique
• use natural objects to explore cross contour of forms
• use line weight and variation to depict foreground & background
• create linear gestures of complex views
• make constructed perspective drawings
• draw from observation using a grid viewer
• develop interior drawings.
• develop drawings synthesizing elements explored during the course

Tools & Materials:
Bring these each week:

• 18 x 24" newsprint tablet
• 18 x 24" spiral drawing tablet
• 18 x 24" charcoal pad, assorted colors including white grey and black
• pencils, assorted 6b, 4b, hb, 2h, ebony, charcoal pencils
• vine & willow charcoal
• conte crayon, including black & white
• drawing ink & drawing pen
• kneaded eraser
• gum eraser
• white plastic eraser
• chamois
• fixative (aerosol must be used outside.) or
• fixative alternative (spray bottle and matte medium diluted with water)
• portfolio
• case or pouch for materials
Other Tools & Materials:

• Meeting 2: picture viewer (index card with rectangle cut in it)
• Meeting 3: 8”x10” cardboard, thread, metal edge rulers, tape, x-acto knife, assorted drawing media,
• Meeting 4: sculls, bones, fruit, vegetables, kitchen knife
• Meeting 5: still life object, drawing ink, drawing pen (handle & drawing point and crow quill)
